This picture was taken a few months ago by my husband. I just seen the picture today and had to post it. Everything is so green and now I look outside and only see white!

Your husky will not overeat when you are feeding him/her healthy. They will actually require very little food. On the other hand, if you don't feed you husky right (feed them junk), they will eat a lot of it. Kind of like giving yourself sugary foods it will actually cause us to eat more and be more hungry.
I also like to incorporate raw food as well as whole foods in their diet along with their dog food. Not as the main source of their diet, but maybe 10-30% of their diet. Any whole food that is high in protein seems works well with huskies. Good examples would be salmon, eggs, turkey, deer, beef & beef organs. And it's always a good idea to give your dog a bone. Just make sure it's raw bones, preferably beef bones. This really does help improve their teeth as well as their coat. And it keeps them mentally stimulated for quite some time. Everyone wants to give their dogs treats, including myself. But what is the best treats for our dogs?
My answer to this questions is Salmon. Raw Wild Caught Skin-On Salmon. And you can find it in your grocery store! I like getting it in the 2 lb. packages, it includes about 8 individual pieces. The 2 lb package is about $7-$10 so about $3.50-$4.00 per lb. depending on if you find it on sale. I know they carry it at Wal-Mart & Aldi's. Your dog will eat it frozen or thawed. Compare it to other dog treats, how much more/less are you paying to have a healthy treat? And the benefits to your dog are truly amazing. Raw Salmon gives your dog the best of both worlds. They just love eating salmon and when they work at the skin is great for their teeth, especially for little puppies when they are teething. It helps them have a nice clean healthy coat. And the nice thing about it, their health improves from eating their treat. The other plus about it is it increases their alertness. They eat less of it to get their nutritional needs met, therefore needing less food. Also saves money at the vet's office because your dog will have less health problems compared to feeding your dog treats where the ingredients consist of sugars, grains, and other words you don't even recognize. I can't stress it enough. Exercise is the number one reason why some people have a really "good" dog vs. other people having a really "bad" dog.
If you want to know why your dog is tearing everything up in sight or running into the neighbor's yard, or digging to much, or just getting into trouble...the number one reason is....YOUR DOG IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE . I understand it's hot this time of year and some days you would rather not have to go, but this is usually when you and your dog need it the most. Just like not going anywhere or getting out can make you crazy, your dog is the same way. Your dog wants to get out. He/She wants to interact with other people, other dogs. She/He gets depressed and bored just staying at home. They want to get out and go for a walk, a jog, or preferrably a run. They love smelling different air, taking in new smells, and meeting new people, or dogs. While you're out, use this time to intergrade Discipline into the walking/running route. Discipline is the second reason why you have a "good" or "bad" dog. Doing a couple commands throughout your walking/running time is extremely beneficial. Something as simple as having your dog do a few push ups. Yes push ups. Start with "SIT" and then go to "DOWN". Then go back to "SIT" and then to "DOWN". Your dog will have fun with the game and it really shows them you care. Help them out the 1st few times, then get it to be part of the routine. They will really enjoy it. Last but not least Affection. After the exercise and discipline you can praise your dog for doing a great job! Then give the dog a nice belly rub. Suddenly you have a "good" dog! Good Dog!!! PS. It also helps this time of year to have a small pool for your dog to cool off in. I recommend those small baby pools. My dogs love it. I've had several people ask me recently about potty training so here goes. I try to do what I think works the best as far as having the puppy on their way by the time they are picked up. The mother will usually clean up after them pretty good until about 3-4 weeks. At this time is about the time when the puppies are usually ready to start eating puppy food. They have a house outside in their area to eat, drink, play, and go potty. They are still with the mother as well. The puppies naturally do not wanting their sleeping area wet or dirty. Also they will follow what "mommy" does. They will see "mommy" shitting and pissing outside and do the same. They usually try to go to the edge of the area, so it's also out of the way of their playing area.
If your new puppy seems to be pretty edgy or pretty vocal, chances are he/she needs to go outside. They naturally don't want to make a mess in what looks like a nice sleeping or playing area. I found it to be most effective if you have a tie out where the puppy has time to unwind and time to him/herself to take care of business. The puppy will come to the door and naturally want to come back in when he/she is finished. Don't be impatient, they will need a few minutes, it doesn't always happen in the first minute or two, it might take 5-10 minutes. Hopefully this helps. |
