I've had several people ask me recently about potty training so here goes. I try to do what I think works the best as far as having the puppy on their way by the time they are picked up. The mother will usually clean up after them pretty good until about 3-4 weeks. At this time is about the time when the puppies are usually ready to start eating puppy food. They have a house outside in their area to eat, drink, play, and go potty. They are still with the mother as well. The puppies naturally do not wanting their sleeping area wet or dirty. Also they will follow what "mommy" does. They will see "mommy" shitting and pissing outside and do the same. They usually try to go to the edge of the area, so it's also out of the way of their playing area.
If your new puppy seems to be pretty edgy or pretty vocal, chances are he/she needs to go outside. They naturally don't want to make a mess in what looks like a nice sleeping or playing area. I found it to be most effective if you have a tie out where the puppy has time to unwind and time to him/herself to take care of business. The puppy will come to the door and naturally want to come back in when he/she is finished. Don't be impatient, they will need a few minutes, it doesn't always happen in the first minute or two, it might take 5-10 minutes. Hopefully this helps. |
